Too Many Interests, Not Enough Time

If you could learn about ANYTHING you wanted, what would it be? Hm…well for starters, I’m a teacher. I consider myself to be a pretty creative person. I also can’t sit still for more than five minutes at a time. Clearing my mind and doing nothing is a skill I have to actively practice. Let’s just say it would be way easier to tell you the things I wouldn’t want to learn! I’ve got the desk area and closet space to prove how vast my interests are.

I’m also a college student. Professor hand me detailed lists of exactly how I must spend the remainder of my time that is not already devoted to my work or family. Whatever free time I have left is usually consumed by thinking about all the things I could be doing, realizing just how burt out I am, and vegging out on the couch. As a result of all of this, many of those good intention projects in my closet have started to collect dust.

Time is not the excuse here. If I was to itemize how I spend my day, I know I would have time for personal things and homework. I just think it’s kind of funny how differently I treat my homework and personal to do list. If something is homework, I’ll pull an all nighter before I don’t do it. However, that book I’ve been meaning to read, or half knitted scarf always seem to be pushed to the side. Maybe I get burnt out, I don’t know…guess I’ll just chalk that one up to being human.

I have to say, I’m pretty darn excited about the independent-learning project. Getting to pick up one of those projects and adding the level of accountability a homework assignment delivers means I might actually learn a new hobby! In fact I have just the thing in mind.

Uke.jpgI bought this ukulele last fall when some life changes made me think I was going to have more time on my hands than I actually did. I had enough time to learn how to tune it, master one chord pattern, and toss it into the back of my closet, where it has been ever since.

The thought of learning this instrument is exciting. I played clarinet from sixth grade until my sophomore year of college, so I feel like I have enough of a musical background to try and tackle this on my own. That’s not to say it will be easy! A stringed instrument is a beast of it’s own. Having played the clarinet, I’m used to having the melody most of the time, and other instruments keeping steady beat. Learning how to be the one to keep the beat will be tricky!

From a general learning perspective, I’m interested to see how this goes. Being totally honest with myself, I know I have a tendency to walk away from something when it gets hard, or I don’t understand it. Choosing this to essentially be my homework, I don’t really have the option to walk away from it. I think that learning how to push through those moments that you want to give up will be extremely valuable  in my teaching career, and life in general.

  1. I too, have the best intentions when it comes to hobbies, but at the end of a long day, sitting in my rocking chair looks pretty great. I am hoping that once I complete my Masters that I will take more time for myself and find something to keep me occupied other than just watching TV and reading. Don’t get me wrong…. I love my reading time. I do think that I need to spread my wings a bit as I am a total homebody.

  2. Savannah, I myself have many projects that are either in my closet or thrown in the trash unfinished. I have always wanted to play a musical instrument like an acoustic guitar, but have never gotten around to doing that. I feel for this independent – learning project there was a lot on the list that I wanted to work on but I decided to go with Art. Hopefully, this will help us be more productive instead of being couch potatoes.

  3. I think that this is a great idea for an independent learning project! I had considered making a effort to practice my violin or guitar since I am not required to do either, currently. I know that when you are making yourself practice for homework it can be frustrating, but it can be a rewarding experience. I wish you luck on this project, and I hope you have lots of fun, especially if you are making music!

  4. I agree that this is kind of an opportunity for force yourself to actually follow through on pursuing a hobby. I usually get bored or too busy to follow a hobby for more than a week so I know where you are coming from!

  5. My husband mentioned that he wanted to try the ukulele so I got him one for Christmas and he hasn’t touched it since. I can’t wait to follow your journey to see how easy or difficult it is to learn. Who knows, I may even pick it up myself! I am with you on projects, I have so many that I plan on doing, but something always comes up. I truly need to learn to manage my time better so I can get more of them completed.

  6. A ukulele is a very interesting instrument to play. I think it will be quite hard to learn, but I am not musically gifted. I always wanted to learn an instrument though. Hopefully everything goes according to plan and you do not get bored too quickly.

  7. I used to play the flute in middle school through high school and stopped when I got to college. I am now learning how to play the guitar and finding it a struggle with keeping the beats as well. It is fun, I won’t lie, but I do find myself having a less of a want to play as I am struggling and just want to walk away. I’m glad you are putting yourself if a position to keep at it. Time is a tricky thing and I hope that this can work in it. Great post and can’t wait to hear how it goes.
