YALSA

This week I discovered a handy new resource called the Young Adult Library Service Association (YALSA). This website is full of numerous resources concerning young adult books. I spent about an hour on the site, and feel like I just scratched the surface! I will say, I did find the site overwhelming initially. However, I think that the more you sift through it, the easier it is to navigate. I will share my three favorite things I found!

Book Lists

There are so many different categories that showcase all of the fabulous YA titles out there. From audiobooks to graphic novels, to my favorite, Teen’s Top Ten. They also keep lists from previous years. I enjoyed going back and looking at what was popular when I was in middle and high school!

Book Finder 

If the book lists aren’t enough to find a winner, YALSA also has a book finder. It’s a search engine just for YA books! If you are like me and don’t even know what to search for, the site will break down options into different categories.

BONUS: It also has an app!! I like this tool, because it can be used to teach students that readers have plans. Instead of wandering aimlessly around the shelves wasting time, they can go in knowing exactly what they want!

Volunteer Opportunities

YALSA has both in person and virtual volunteer opportunities! I was under the impression that these opportunities are open to youth, but I’m not entirely sure. Regardless, I think it would be a good thing to encourage students to look into. I know there are some students that are obsessed when it comes to reading, and this could be a great opportunity for them! Something to mention as you approach the summer months, especially if your students aren’t all of working age.

All in all, this website seems like a great resource! A ton of useful information. 🙂
