Harry Potter Moment of the Week 10/1/15

HPMOTW (2)

Time for another Harry Potter Moment of the Week! I found this meme on Uncorked Thoughts, and it has been a lot of fun so far. This week’s topic: favorite quote from Philosopher’s (or Sorcerer’s) Stone.

“Fear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself.” –Albus Dumbledore.

This quote has actually been passed around to a few different characters in the movies and books (I believe it’s also said in Chamber of Secrets…), but I believe Dumbledore is first credited with saying it. He visits Harry in the hospital wing shortly after the battle with Quirell/Voldemort. Harry is no stranger to using Voldemort’s name, but stops himself from doing so, since he is in the presence of a teacher. Dumbledore assures Harry that Voldemort’s name should be used. This is a pretty powerful statement. It goes to show just how terrible Voldemort is—he has instilled so much fear in people, to the point where they don’t want to say his name. Dumbledore is right though. Voldemort wants people to fear him. In all actuality, not saying his name give him even more validation.

  1. Eisenhower said “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.” Dumbledore is our Winston Churchill and our Eisenhower of this series. Fear and denial are a thing that the people of the Hogwarts world seem to suffer, just as we do in the the real world.
